Bumps Cause Spree to Nearly Stall

Hi folks, great forum. First time poster.

I just acquired a 1986 Spree. I have been doing some maintenance and tuning of it, but I can't seem to figure out this engine RPM dip (it nearly stalls) that occurs every time the Spree hits a bump. My common sense tells me there is a fuel starvation event caused by the bump in the road, but from a practical point of view I cannot think of what is actually occurring to cause this. Thoughts?

Thanks.

Hello, and welcome to the forums!

I have been having the same problem recently too, I think it has something to do with the carb float pin/needle? Im not too sure but I replaced the old one and it started to act up. Try to clean your carb if you hav'nt already and see if it helps.

Clean carb check to make sure air box and filter are tight and good shape. Check your plug wire is secure. I had s an issue towards the end of a 45 mile ride upon hitting certain bumps in the road very similar. For me it was a loose plug wire.

I've had the wires pop off of the coil and had a stall on bumps condition. Also if your idle air mixture is too lean I've had that issue. Strange but a richer mixture fixed it

Im running a 90 jet and im wondering if the carb bowl is gettign sucked dry too fast, and when I hit a bump it sloshes and causes it to starve, because if im 1/2 throttle and hit a bump its starts to bog, then if I open it fully it catches right back up and runs right up the powerban.

You must be running without the airbox if you have a 90 jet or do you have the bbk? Then I would really run the idle air mixture further into the rich zone. The pilot idle air mixture screw is responsible for about 1/4 throttle possibility of more so once you hit the gas the main jet comes im and saves the day. Also go through the wiring harness down on the frame and check all of the green ground wires and make sure the grounds are all connected. The reason why I say this is because about a year ago I had wacky troubles with my dio motor on my spree. It was lacking a ground and it wouldn't rev up until I shook it or hit a bump.

I think Pat is on to something here, perhaps adding a small ground wire from frame to engine and trying a ride over bumps would be a great experiment.
Are you sure the float level is correct ?

My 85 Spree used to actually die if I went down a steep hill with a little brake applied.

My 84 did that when I first got it. Idle air mixture adjustment solved it.

Sorry to bump post, but I rejetted to a 82 and it is running lots better, still stalls out if I wot for too long, but those it less often.

You may have an obstruction in A fuel line. Or a flow issue through the screen in the tank

check the carb's choke bowl. If someone along the way has installed the two mounting bolts in the wrong spot it will put s dent in the choke bowl and not let the bystarter choke the carb. This was the exact problem that i had.

the second page has pictures of what my issue was.
