do a compression test .. useing the starter you need about 90 psi to start ....

If it starts on the first kick your compression is ok. Im almost 100% sure its the starter clutch losing its grip.

when kicking over the motor it move faster and dose not let as munch leak around the rings.... giving you more compression then with the starter... you cood have 90 psi kicking it and 80 with the starter...

@kauaianman
faulty starter clutch is the safe bet. If it starts and runs fine with the kick start... low compression is not the issue. Compression reading will be the same wether you use the kick lever or the starter (5 revolutions is 5 revolutions no matter how u slice it). I would say his 10psi difference could be chalked up to a weak starter or starter clutch that gave him one or two revoltions compared to his kickstarter when performing the compression test.

the battery is probably too weak to spin the motor fast enough to start it.or the starter motor is worn out and can't spin the motor fast enough.
I would jump it to a car battery and see if it makes a difference.

Also an almost 30 year old starter was near the end of its life 15 years ago.

Good starter + good battery = easy starts
