howdy,
i let my cousing go for a ride on the spree - which he had done many times before - but this time he was drunk and very disorderly - when he got back it made a sound like a sack of bolts when it was rolling - when its stationary and the engine is just running it sounds fine - but when its rolling and going it sounds awful - does anyone have any idea what it could be - i'm going to try to avoid using it but i don't want to have to take it apart - but i'm sure i'll have to.
so any suggestions will be apreciated.

maby there is something rideing on ur tire, then cheack ur final reduction oil for chunks, and check ur belt and cluch.

i finally got around to checking out the noise,
i still don't know what it is for sure,
but when I take off the clutch and pully cover
the sound is gone - i think it might be part of the kickstart assembly - does anything go wrong with it that it would make that kind of a rattle.
i wish i could drive it without the cover - but i can't start it without the cover -
any idea's would be appreciated -

try starting it with a nut driver on the starter gear and see if it rattles then {besides the starter gear rattle}

I now have this same situation. What did you discover?

I have narrowed it down I think.

I only hear the noise when the engine is running. It does not have to be in motion and the back wheel does not have to be moving.

I don't hear the noise when the engine is turned off and the bike is rolling down a hill at an appreciable speed.

I don't hear the noise when the engine is on but the clutch has been removed.

So, I think it is the clutch but I don't see or hear anything wrong with it when I take it out and examine it.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have found other threads that sort of mention this issue but none have any info on the noise or what is causing it.

I'm not aware of anyone that has solved this issue... I have seen it from time to time.

My hypothesis is that it's in the clutch somewhere; either the main nut or pivot clips are loose/missing. But you said you've checked this. Perhaps disassemble the clutch and grease the clutch pad pivots? Most clutches I've looked at, this pin is full of rust. Also a good time to check that pads and bell are in spec

The gearbox is noisy, but that's more of a gear whine sound.

Yes I would replace the entire clutch. Either E-bay or maybe Upsmale has one to sell.

I replaced the clutch and I still hear the rattling noise.

Plus now I have another issue and I don't know if it is related or not.

Something in the transmission is slipping because from a standing stop I can open it up to WOT and it revs up fast but does not go anywhere. In fact I can put my feet down and hold the bike still at WOT. I am thinking the belt is slipping on the drive face but I don't know for sure.

It does this with any combination of three different belts, two different clutch assemblies and two different drive faces.

edit - I can manually turn the clutch and the belt slides through the drive face with some resistance. Is that normal?

The front and rear pulley SHOULD NOT be able to turn independently.

Yeah, but why is mine? Is it a worn pulley or are both the belts I have worn? I could believe one is because it is old. But the other is a new belt, but it is not a Honda belt. I bought it at NAPA.

I've tried two different clutches and it is the same with either. I have tried it with two different drive faces and it is the same with either.

When I grab the rear pulley by hand and rotate it the belt will slip through the front drive pulley. As an experiment I ground down some of the material to make the space in the groove of the pulley a little narrower to have more grip on the belt and it made no difference. This makes me think that the problem is not the width of the belt but the circumference of the belt is longer than it needs to be.

So, unless someone has more insight into this situation I will be ordering a new belt.

I ordered a new Honda belt and it is quite a bit wider than the Honda belt that was in there before. Does the width vary or are there different widths available?

Anyhow, the scoot performs MUCH better now. Slower take off but a higher top end.
