Pully Mod (not speed)

Ok, srry bout the subject but i didnt know how to word it.

Hopefully everyone knows about the pully mod and how u can shave some off the pully to gain some speed...BUT...I was wondering if (and how I would go about doing it) instead of shaving some off the pully, if I could put a washer between them in order to gain low-end speed (I live in a very hilly area and am more worried about gaining speed than having it).

If this is at all possible please reply with your suggestions on how to do it, and if anyone knows about how much top speed I would loose by doing so.

That should work fine, just use thin washers. You're looking to add about .03", which is about 1/32". Most washers are 1/16", and too thick, I think.

Watch the back part of the belt, that it stays inside the clutch halves. You should get better take off this way. You get higher RPM engagement since the clutch is now turning slower compared to the engine, and the Spree should have more torque at the higher RPM. I'm guessing that you'll loose 2-5 MPH on topend.

One other guy tried this and it didn't work, I'm guessing that he was using overly thick washers. This area is really sensitive to changes.

Is that it? Kewl....so all i have to do is take off the pully (at the engine) and put a thin washer inbetween the pully halves?

well, i lucked out. it worked! great takeoff along with good hill accell/speed. Thanks for your advice noiseguy. although...now i think i should try and find and even colder running plug for it since now it runs at higher rpm longer...any thoughts?

Yes on colder plug. What's your top speed now?

seems to top out more around 30 rather than 35 (although instead of .3 inch i found a .4).

Where could I get a colder plug? (other than the BPR8HS (or what I use: Champion QL78YC equivallent))

actually, it runs fine if not better than before!

tops out maybe around 32-33mph...but accelorates like crazy, even up hills!

best thing is, what i could do before at full throttle (on a flat) i can now do at 1/4-1/2 throttle.

Great modification for driving around in hilly areas.

i was wondering if i could get some more info on what you did. i am looking to do the same thing to a spree i am about to prchase, im more interested in getting more low end then hitting 40mph. any advice you could give me will help a ton.

when I took the front pully off of the shaft, there was a thin washer behind it (about .03" i think thick). I used that washer in between the pully halves and then put it back together as normal. The scooter will be able to idle a little higher without moving the back tire; good improvement on acceleration; and about 3 mph lost at top end.

Dude, get that washer back where it belongs or buy another one to replace it. You need that washer in there or you will ruin the crank!

This is a good tip though, and those washers are the right thickness to do this. Good for offroading!

why will it ruin the crank?

Not exactly sure... I think that the washer keeps the crank and pulley half turning together, since it's made of a softer material. I've seen the damage, though, and it's not easy to fix.
