86' Alternator on a 85' Frame

Post by rogerthat »

I was thinking of putting an 86' engine on an 85' frame, but the wires from the alternator are a little different. The 86' has four wires total, and the 85' has five. The three stator wires are a match, and the blue wire with a yellow stripe is a match, but the 85' has an extra green wire, from the pulse generator. Is that another ground? Will the 85' frame care if it's not connected?

Thanks

The green wire is a ground. Just connect it to any other green wire of to the frame.

If I use the 86' engine, that doesn't have a green wire, then the green connector on the frame, I can just leave loose then, since it's just a ground for the 85'.

But if you do not ground it the charging system will not work right.

Time to look at wire diagrams - Green Wire provides ground only to the Pulse coil.

Alternator ground is via the engine case --> Starter Green wire --> Battery.

When swapping '86/87 Spree engine into an '84/85', the Green wire bullet connector to pulse coil can be left hanging.

Thank you mousewheels. That's what I was thinking. It was providing a ground connection for the 85', but the 86' pulse coil is already grounded.
