Check for spark before you do anything.

Buy a new spark plug, in fact buy 2, they're like a couple bucks each. Then test spark to make sure it's bright blue before you hook it back up. Check your manual on what spark will fit your model.

Thanks for the ideas. I took the plug out of my 2003 that I knew works, and tried it in the 88. No spark. What can I check next? Is there a fuse to check, or is the mag coil suspect?

The service manual has a complete check for the ignition system.

Thanks for the advice. I went through the electrical checks and found the following:

Ignition coil resistance was .4ohms versus the .1-.2 range is this a problem?

Pulse generator was 122 ohms between the blue and green but .7ohms between the green and yellow

All other checks were within allowable ranges.

Do I need a new ignition coil?

Thanks................

Thanks for the input regarding the NGK plugs. Took out the Autolite, put in new NGK with .028 gap and it started on first manual crank. My Dad used to say to always check something simple when there is a problem.....good advice.
