i have an 86 spree, i found it in the woods and got it all cleaned up and cranking. but when i start it up it will only run for a few seconds or until i remove my 2amp 12v charger from the battery. im pretty sure its the alternator because there looks like theres some exposed wire in it the windings and because of the not running. a new alternator is out of my price range and i don't know how to fix it. can anyone help me out? or show me where to get a cheap replacement

Can you take a picture of the wires that you think are the problem You may also need to ground of the motor to the frame better

The battery has NOTHING to do with the ignition system so you are wrong on your guess. The battery runs the starter and only some of the lights.

i cleaned the carb yes, and i replaced all the bad wires on it that i found, everything has full power and seems like it will work but once it starts it will shut off after 30secs of running. i thought it would be the alternator not charging the battery.

The battery has nothing to do with the engine running. * you can run without the battery if you have a kick starter.
This is too short a time to run the float bowl dry if if no additional fuel is coming in. Sounds more like to much fuel, like the petcock is leaking fuel into the intake thru the vacuum line.

so if i got a new vacuum line and petcock do you think that might fix it?

Troubleshoot it,don't just replace parts. Get a clear line for the vacuum line, while you are at it replace the fuel lines too, never a bad idea, and see if there is fuel running down the vacuum line from the petcock.
