broke z50r ?

Hi all.
I just rebuilt the motor in my boss' 1982 z50r...runs great. I put it all back together cleaned it up (409) went to kick start it and the kick start feels like there is no compression like there is no mechanical conection between the kickstart and the crank. But when I put it in gear and kick it ,the tranny engages and it begins the back wheel a turnin'...ok two wheel gurus....any ideas? I dont want to tell my boss the tranny is broke. PLEASE HELP!!!!

clutch adjusted too tight...backed it off and started just fine....false alarm folks.
