Put on AX24 belt, Spree stalls

I decided to replace the original 86 Spree belt yesyerday as I "smelt" some rubber the other day. The little bike only has 1300 miles on it and ran well. Took it off and replaced with an AX24. Seated it properly and closed it up. Spree is now very difficult to start and dies in 5 to 10 seconds. I guess I'll order the Honda belt which should be sized properly. Anyone else ever experience something like this? duck

Yes
If the belt is too thick, it will be too tight, and stall your engine.
You can cut the center spring in the clutch (it will give you the right tension on the belt and a few mph on the topend).....but just get the right belt, less likey to mess up your ride.

Thanks traffic. Yup, I'll get the proper belt. Several had said the ax24 is a good replacement, but it didn't work well for me. I appreciate the quick response. duck

I just don't see how the belt could cause the engine to stall or to be hard to start. For the belt to do that it would have to pull the clutch into the bell and I don't think that is possible. Have you tried removing the belt and see if it still does it?

unless the motor's idle is set too high and the clutch is engaging. Then the belt could play a factor.

unless the motor's idle is set too high and the clutch is engaging. Then the belt could play a factor.
But that is not the belt's fault, the is the mechanic's fault.

I put the original belt back on and it ran smoothly. Trafficjamz was spot on with his reply. The original belt miked out at .473 and was still in good shape. I very lightly sanded the sides of the belt with 100 grit sandpaper as there was a slight sheen. Runs better now than before!!! Also, an easy way to put on the belt is to use a 12" string that is looped behind the belt and pull it towards the front of the bike. This stretches the belt and gives you adequate tension to reset the drive starter gear into the splines. Incidently, when I took the cover off to remove the AX24 belt, there was some shredded rubber inside the casing. Bear, you could be right that it was the mechanic's fault, however, that's history. The belt just seemed a little large. Oh yes, thank you for serving our country. I was in Quang Tri up north in 69-70. duck
