something may have gotten in the gas tank, and went into the carb. clean carb thoroughly. then report back

it's probably the filler hose for the gears.

and it could be stuck in your high speed venturi, and not your low speed. i would clean the carb

so when you twist the throttle does it just rev? or does it completely bog out and die?

So, the wheel won't turn at all while on the stand, but the engine dies?

this is exactly what I was going to ask. Will it free spin the wheel on the stand?

Greetings:

I suggest you change the spark plug on principle before you do anything else. I've lost count of the times when doing this unexpectedly solved my problem.

Sure sounds like a dirty carb issue. If the running gear isn't frozen and the engine just dies, something's happening to the mixture when the throttle opens. Commonly that's a gummy pilot circuit or clogged main/emulsion tube, although there sure are other possibilities. Mouse's nest in the airbox comes to mind... :)
