I think that's exactly what it was - a means to defeat the bystarter. It's the only logical answer, and based on a few small bodges I've discovered elsewhere (electrical tape where the airbox cap screw should go, a ragged, warped air filter, non-standard 'petcock' with a screw stuck in it to keep gas flowing, etc etc) it's in keeping with a PO's modus non-operandi. :)

I've addressed all those issues except for the bystarter 'sleeve' - which I'll try removing later. But - the good news is - the bike starts up cold, after sitting overnight. First time that's happened. The idle, WOT, and general engine operation are smooth. So - I'm a happy camper. :D

There's a bit of occasional seapage at the carb's gasket seam, though. I'm probably going to have to replace the gasket. Also, you mentioned an O-ring in the mixture screw (I found the spring). It's missing as well as the one on the bystarter port. A gasket kit is definately in order.

So - I've learned a LOT these past few weeks - thanks to you and everybody here. You guys have obviously been through all this before, and your help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Clive
I would say it could be. I have seen no small springs in any of the bystator diagrams. Mabe it was just someones missing spring that fell behind the carb and dropped out when I removed the choke. Then maybe too I never saw it at all. I could never find it again. Anyway I have moved on to my melting fuse problem when I plug in the rectifier. The bystator seems fine without it. Zeolig

Yes, it could have been an air/mix screw or idle adjustment spring which was stuck behind the carb and came loose when I took the choke of. Like I thought I saw a small spring but could not find it again. Anyway the bystator seems to be working just fine without the phantom spring.zeolig

It's unlikely two Spree owners would discover the same tiny spring in two different carbs without there being, in fact, a small tiny spring.

Then again, maybe we're in the Twilight Zone.
