MY FIRST VARIATOR TEARDOWN

Post by ronpack »

This is on the 82 urban express, the "before" was ran good top speed about 30, up hills were bogging down to 8-10mph, this bike only has 360 miles on it so nothing was wore out. when I opened the case everything was and still is in clean like new condition. I took apart the variator drive and the ramp plate and the rollers, this came with 6 rollers that weighed 13gr each on my digital scale, all with a plastic cover on each roller. no flat spots, no gouges, just the inside of the unit was packed with 25 year old grease from the factory which was still pliable
NOW.....the solution, I didn't have any smaller weights, I will get some and install them at a later date, I did remove half the 6 leaving 3 weights spaced out around the pully
The bike revs a lot faster (anyone know if this bike is equipped with any type of rev limiter?), pulls hard to 35 mph, and stays at 20-25 on the same hills it bogged to 10mph on

give me your thoughts, good and bad, any other simple speed tricks you guys have?

Ron Sounds like you made a difference. Good job. If you can, put a picture of your bike on the net for all to see.

Yeah, I like the urban express, and yours is barley ridden 8)

I don't think the urban express had a rev limiter. None of the later 80's Hondas have rev limiters either.
