Ruckus Variator in a SA50 motor

Post by SpyderMike »

well i looked back about 9 pages from a search on "ruckus" to see a thread to post this in and no go so...

i swapped my Keli vari w/ stock ramp plate today for a ruckus stock vari and stock ruckus ramp plate

i was running 51g in the Keli so i just moved them over into the ruck vari

the difference was noticed immediately, the take off on the Keli bogged slightly from 0-5ish mph then would slingshot
the ruck seemed to have the same lower rpm off the line as well but it never raised after the 5mph, actually seemed to lower around 20-25mph mark, so i may be able to drop some weight and see what happens
reaching top speed w/ the ruck takes longer than the keli, but the top seems like it can go faster (no gps so after 35 idk anymore for sure but the needle was farther than before) and i was in the city so a long hold cant happen as i know im above the 35mph posted limit

im heading back out now to play around w/ thing and ill report back when im done

oh and i almost forgot....the ruck vari did rub slightly on the inside of the case where the starter pinion gear sits, nothing a grinding bit on a dremel couldnt take care of

well i got it settled down to 48g and it seems to work almost the same as the Keli but i now have a little more top end that i think is due to the lower rps that the ruck seems to work at

(please note that im playing this by ear i do not have a tach to confirm the lower rpm's, i just know how it sounded before)

+3-5 mph

moral of the story....go on totalruckus.com if your planning on buying a high performance pulley, i scored mine for $10

thanx for the report. That's good to know. and +3-5mph over a Keli for 1/3 the price is pretty impressive!

Well I've got one coming from scooterwerx, can't wait to see the difference over the stock NB50 variator. Glad I didn't shell out for a Keli either, I bet the Ruckus variator is better quality as well, OEM Honda means quality.

Got my hours cut at work so i cancelled the internet, Charter sent me a good internet offer so i'm back :). Just asking about center spring since i'm running the 1.5k with 36 grams, 48 grams would shift way too soon.

I found out i was running 30 grams . That must have happened the same day i don't remember putting my needle clip in richer position. Both are fixed now :)

Just an update, 48-51 grams works great with my R1. I was at 30 grams before and decided to mount a camera to see the clutch in action, i wish i did this sooner, it seems like the best way to fine tune. First video is 30 grams, you can see rollers are struggling to open clutch pulleys and i only got to about 40-45 mph. 2nd video is 51 grams, clutch is completely open and i hit 60 easily. My belt is worn out and i think the 48 grams will be good with a new belt. I forgot to mention i'm running the Ruckus variator too.

Yes i know i need to up my pilot jet since there was a bog on acceleration in second video. I just happened to be tuning carb at same time.

Malossi 72cc (boost port in case ported to match cylinder)
7.9:1 gears (want 9:1)
R1 muffler (PG Long in the future)
Ruckus variator and ramp plate (51 grams for now)
1.5k center spring
stock clutch grab springs
CT racing manifold and reeds
28mm OKO 55 pilot and 138 main (changing to 24mm in the future)
Uni air filter

I think that's it :)
