won't go over 15
I have an 88 elite, and I just replaced the rollers, and belt. I was able to drive it around town, but it was progressively bogging down and stalling at idle speed. Now after the roller and belt replacement the dang thing won't go over 15 mph, and idles even worse. Should I look into just replacing the carb, clutch springs, center spring, or weights?

id say undo what you did and reinstall...see if that helps

did you replace w/ the same size rollers? grease them? didnt loose the little things that keep the back plate lined up right?Burgleflickle wrote:I did that, and still nothing...

Everything is lined up correctly. The variator had dents in the back plate that holds everything in(not the ramp). It wasn't intrusive and was like that when I pulled it off. I used a makeshift puller(ac pulley tool) that only pulled on the screws. Everything went back in the way it went out including ramp guides and I greased the inside. I'm inkling toward the clutch sticking because it is bogging after replacing the belt and pulleys. It hit 30 like 2 weeks ago on a flat straight away, but anything can happen with a carburetor too.

1. Put in a new spark plug.
2. See if that fixes the whole mess.
3. If not see the hundreds of carb cleaning threads.
4. Fix what you may have messed up in the tranny. Lose the variator grease and cover altogether, and make sure all the contact points between the belt and pulley faces are free of the stuff. If the rollers have a flat spot, replace. Be careful installing the fixed drive face. If the splines are misaligned and you start carelessly whacking with a wrench or an impact gun, the splines can be crushed. The impact gun installation method can also knock your crank out of true, leading to leaking crank seals and back to Problem A.

Random failures are often misinterpreted as the consequence of a recent Owner intervention, but it's not always so. I suggest you quit mucking around with your transmission before you break something. Even the worst pulley lube job in the world won't cause it to stall and idle poorly. Your Problem isn't with how the engine power is managed by the drivetrain but with the power supply - A: the Engine. remove that grease out of the variator. remove yout air filter from your carb. start your bike. open it up wot, then smother the carb with your hand. sometimes doing this, the dirt will be sucked out of the carb if it indeed is a little dirty.
