Honda Gyro TG50M (1985)...lets make her faster?
Okay I have two of these rare gems that run great. One is complete, other is 98% complete. Only thing is that they go only like 30!!! I was able to get my old Spree up to a 60cc and with the limiter removed I got around 40mph.
This thing has a lot of torque and im wondering if its like a spree and I can removed limiters, dremel the washer and allow more air to get more speed, or am I out of luck?
I know these are rare and thats why I want to get it right, hehe

Having 2 TG50 Gyros one at 100% and the other 98% complete is great!
There is not much I've seen in the way of easy hop ups for the Gyro.
There are no restrictions in the intake or exhaust pipe to 'dremel' out.
The transmission is a planetary geared 2 speed automatic clutch, so belt drive tricks - wider belt, adjusting/shimming etc to change the drive ratio are not possible.
There's two Yahoo groups - 'Ariel' and '3_wheel_mopeds_Honda_Gyros' that has some info. The latter group has some pics from Japan of some gyros that were raced, you might get some ideas there. Bigger wheels/tires were one easy change.

Okay so here is what I found after prodding and reading. The gyro may have a small piece of metal behind the clutch that limits it from hitting 35mph. I see this as true because other 50cc engines can do a honest 40mph+, this scooter is light and should do better. Also i notice it shifts at around 15mph at the tee. So that is my minimal mark to go off of.
The Honda Elite Piston is higher compression and fits the jug, also they make over sized pistons for it so I can go to a .50 overbore without worrying. When the day comes that I need a new piston. I can go to the next bore.
The exhaust ports are very sharp. Doing some dremel work I should be able to get another 2-3mph out of her by cleaning up the flow. Also with how big this exhaust is, its no wonder its losing some power, by using a pipe cleaner and a drill with a flex hose I can clean out lots of the carbon that has accumulated.
I have a base now. So now im going after my goal. If there is a limiter in this engine, I will pull it and hopefully gain speed. if not, then with the other work. I can get a honest 37-40 with the higher RPM's.
I'll start the project in the coming weeks =)

Nice photos! Those Gyros look excellent.
Never heard about a metal piece on the clutch to limit speed. Far as I know, they are locked up at top speed. Do you have a link for that info?

OMG dude, if you have the part that covers the battery. I will pay ya for it. Thats all I need for the red one... *drools*
There was a link last year on a guy that updated his gyro to go 45mph. He lived in Japan and a member on a gaming website helped me asked questions. He said that the CVT on most gyros will restrict the clutch from full engagement, also that a elite 50 piston (domed) and rings helped the speed on hills.
I have been asking some of my friends in Japan to get some info. Some of them have told me that they can be bored and sleeved to 70cc. But none of them have the Roadfox *85/86* model.
Do you have a parts engine or maybe a cylinder/head that you can measure and take pics of? Im trying to track down a engine to modify (larger carb, bored engine, better clutch, ect..) but its been slim pickings.
Any info you can give will also help. =)

Battery cover is hard to find. I got one, with the pile of parts Gyros. Used to be the place to get them was on eBay - a guy running 'M + R Motorsports' username 'stewsjunk'. I don't know if he still has any, but if you haven't already, give him a try. He's sort of local in Puyallup.OMG dude, if you have the part that covers the battery. I will pay ya for it. -- Transmissions --
Most Gyros do have variable belt drive. The Honda Stream, GyroX, Gyro UP and Canopy all do, but they were never US import models. Ours have a 2 speed automatic, all gear transmission.
View of the low gear clutch - Also look at the cyl, rust so bad the fins fell off. Bottom and top end were all trash... But trans parts turned out fine
In operation, it's a model of simplicity. At idle, the low clutch is disengaged. Off idle to 15mph or so, the low clutch drives the drum on the planetary gear set. The planetary provides the 1st gear reduction. At the point the High clutch starts engaging, it locks up the planetary. At that point, both clutches are gripping, and engine is locked to the final drive ratio. I'm not seeing how a shim or washer could alter the ratio.

Why yes - and not all that far away from you. PM me sometime if you like. The scooters original owners were the rental shop at the ocean, hence rust and wear.Actually, do you live in WA? Those look like the ones that used to be a beach rental shop years back..
d***, so we have no belt... that defeats the washer idea. So, only hope is the actual RPM's eh?
I have a theory too. After reading that I took my Gyro down a hill here in West Seattle (Roxbury), shut the engine off and let it roll as fast as it could. There is bogging at 37mph, I am guessing thats all the trans of these machines can take.
So, how much usable bore is there on these engines? Can they be bored at all? Whats the chance of a 84 gyro engine fitting? I have a lead on one that if needed I will use as a base on my project.
I know on the atvs I have worked on, some people have lightened parts or clutch discs that can be used to increase speed. Do the gyros have anything that can help that clutch? Maybe springs that engage better.
Have you tried doing port work or larger carbs on the gyro? Just cleaning all the d*** carbon build up out helped mine to get from 29 to 31mph. Also the back one has a battery, red one doesnt. Black one goes faster, actually all the 85's have gone faster from what I have seen... wonder why?
I wouldnt mind coming down/up and taking a look or going for a ride if anything. I have only seen 2 other gyros here in WA and for all i know they could have been yours!
