New oil pump differs from old one.

Post by Grandpa »

I bought a new oil pump for my 85 Spree. It differs from the old one. The old one has the single mounting bolt going through the flange of the pump and into the engine bolt hole. The new one has a much larger hole through the flange and in this spot is some kinda spacer. It slides up and down and will come right out.

What is this spacer thing and how to I put the small original mounting bolt into the new pump's larger hole?

Thanks, Grandpa.

Where did you get the new pump from?

Seems to me somehow you ended up with the wrong pump.

My advice would be to either delete the oil pump and run on premix (my personal favorite) or replace it with one from a Spree.

They are small and not in high demand. I can't imagine you would have to pay more than 10-20 dollars max for the correct pump.

Get pictures before hand to make sure.

I got it from a place called Babbitts in Michigan. A long time ago....lol. Probably last year. Finally I got around to attempting to install it this afternoon. I paid just over $100 for a brand new one.

Oh, and I lied. This spacer thing I'm referring to does move up and down but won't come out. I could put a longer bolt through the spacer and bolt it to the original hole but that wouldn't stop the whole pump from sliding up and down on the spacer, which is all the original bolt does. I may just force this spacer out, put a large washer over the larger flange hole, use the small original bolt and put it in. It seems to be correct in all other aspects, including the length of the pushrod with the gear on it.

I agree with you...it must be the wrong pump...my thought was to ask on here is there was something special to do if this is in fact a replacement pump with an upgrade of some sort.

I don't like the idea of using premix...I like to keep things the way they were engineered by smarter-than-me people (but not better looking  )

Thanks for the reply.

Does your pump look like the SB50 below?
If so, you can put a plate over the top of the spacer to hold down the oil pump.

Nice pics Mr. Mousewheels. And you're correct .... it looks like the SB50. You can plainly see the "spacer" that slides up and down in your pic.

Apparently they sent me the wrong part.

I'll try to force out the spacer and put a plate or washer over the large hole.

Thanks very much,

Grandpa.
