Pouring gas out of my muffler!!!

Post by Tywoo »

Hi all I have been browsing the site for awhile but just now have created an account. I have a 1986 Honda spree that I have gotten for free. I have had it running and zipping around, but just recently I had to replace my clutch drive, mine was all tore up bad. I replaced the clutch and cleaned everything out and now when I try to start it gas pours out of my muffler. I have cleaned my carb multiple times and went through the whole thing and can't figure it out. The only place gas is coming out is the exhaust. I have used the search function and have had no luck finding an answer to this problem. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Also I had it running yesterday and it ran just fine then went an parked it, checked it before I went to bed and noticed it had been pouring out the gas!

Thank you
Tywoo

Its odd to have that much excess fuel make it to the exhaust and pour out. Have you confirmed its fuel? If there is that much fuel in the exhaust you need to pull the pipe and check it out, that could be a bomb bolted to the side of the scooter. I wonder if the vacuum side of the petcock let go and is leaking fuel down into the crankcase then its getting blown up into the exhaust. The petcock is the automatic fuel shutoff up under the front of the seat attached to the fuel tank, it has two lines from it. One line goes to the intake tube which is the vacuum line, the other line is the fuel line to the carb. If you apply vacuum by gently sucking on the vac line fuel should come out of the fuel line. If there is fuel in the vacuum line that could be your issue. Or the two lines are swapped. The manual will guide you to make sure the lines are in their proper places, it could be easy to get them mixed up. First thoughts out my head hope it helps

It is definetly gas lol. I got took the lines off to the carb and the fuel line let out the excess and stoped, so good sign there. Then i took the vacume off and it didn't drip but when i put some presure in the line the fuel line let the gas out and stoped but fuel ran out of the vacume line, then stopped. Correct me if i am wrong but the vacume line shouldnt have fuel coming out at all right? Then I let it sit for awhile and took a breather, came back hooked the lines back up and it started right up. I was blown away it was spraying gas out of the muffler "the excess left in there i imagine" then stoped. White smoke came out of course, then stopped and i ran pretty good. Any ideas on what happend? Maybe i just need to get a new petcock?

Thanks

Yes thats correct, fuel should never come out of the vacuum line. Sometimes the petcocks just give up. Sounds like you have found the problem :-) a new petcock and you will be all set.
