I was thinking of putting an 86' engine on an 85' frame, but the wires from the alternator are a little different. The 86' has four wires total, and the 85' has five. The three stator wires are a match, and the blue wire with a yellow stripe is a match, but the 85' has an extra green wire, from the pulse generator. Is that another ground? Will the 85' frame care if it's not connected?
Thanks

The green wire is a ground. Just connect it to any other green wire of to the frame.

Re: 86' Alternator on a 85' Frame
If I use the 86' engine, that doesn't have a green wire, then the green connector on the frame, I can just leave loose then, since it's just a ground for the 85'.

But if you do not ground it the charging system will not work right.rogerthat wrote:If I use the 86' engine, that doesn't have a green wire, then the green connector on the frame, I can just leave loose then, since it's just a ground for the 85'.

Re: 86' Alternator on a 85' Frame
Time to look at wire diagrams - Green Wire provides ground only to the Pulse coil.the 85' has an extra green wire, from the pulse generator. Is that another ground? Will the 85' frame care if it's not connected?
Alternator ground is via the engine case --> Starter Green wire --> Battery.
When swapping '86/87 Spree engine into an '84/85', the Green wire bullet connector to pulse coil can be left hanging.
Re: 86' Alternator on a 85' Frame
Thank you mousewheels. That's what I was thinking. It was providing a ground connection for the 85', but the 86' pulse coil is already grounded. When swapping '86/87 Spree engine into an '84/85', the Green wire bullet connector to pulse coil can be left hanging.
