Not the greatest tech guru... Did not find a "newbie" section, so I'll post here:

New Aero 80 owner, first of many scooters to come, I am sure.

From Boise Idaho, Building custodian, 41 yrs, 5'8"/250 lbs.

Scooter is a stocker with the bystarter yanked. It was dead when I bought the beast, replaced with a manual primer from a riding lawnmower by original owner.

Ordered the new belt and rollers after searching many posts.

Fuel filter is also on the way, and she needs a new spark plug boot a.s.a.p.

I want part numbers for this dual reed ct intake thingy and a 19mm carb (jetted for moderate riding -- I'm not interested in more than 50 m.p.h.) -- a bit more snort at stoplights and a top end around the high 40s will be good for me. This is my summertime daily driver project.

I haven't had this much fun since I learned to ride my first bicycle!!!
She does about 37 on a flat windless road with my big butt on her back right now, and some hills she barely climbs from a dead start.

Have you talked to bear yet if not he should be able to help you he is a an aero guru and a genius when it comes to 2 strokes.

I've noted that he seems to be the wise one, yes. I wanted to say hello in a general way before I started picking individual brains.
I'll commence rifling through posts and asking questions directly this weekend. Right now I figured a few days to introduce myself and maybe get this intake, reedcage and carb setup ordered, since it seems I've a decent idea of what riding I'll be doing primarily and have read a few hundred posts but have found no pn for any of the big 3 intake items. The expansion chamber exhaust project is likely to be easy enough for me, since my side covers annoy the crap outta me in the first place and I've been all over the talus website reading about it. The carb/reed/new throttle cable/airbox/intake manifold thing is where I am nervous. apparently I am needing the ct and an oko 19, jets starting around 105/40? I'll be sure to get it right before I order anything major.

Yeah but that manifold is for a high revving engine and expensive. This one is half the price and will work better for you.

Also a 19 mm carb is not worth the money over the stock 18 mm carb. Go 21 mm or 24 mm.

Welcome, the Aero 80 is a great one to start with. By the end of summer you'll be looking for your next one - if not before.

Bone stock my 80 hits 45 (per speedo, not gps), maintains 35 on steep hills and has plenty of torque starting off - and I weigh about 220.

Will be anxious to hear what you go with and how it works for you.

Compression comes out perfect, so my lack of speed is due to carb tuning and belt/roller issues most likely? 35 most of the time, 37 if I am downhill, 39 if I have a tailwind and steep downhill. She hit 41 for maybe 100 feet ONCE by chance. 43-45? Haven't seen it yet. Uphill she slows to about 25 on steep ones...

I thought the stock carb was a 16. If it's 18, 1 mm IS wasteful. I just don't want the headache of a too big carb anymore than a too small one.

Bystarter plumbing... any specifics on what I should do to it? A pic or 3 would be awesome and appreciated. b.t.w., as to mileage, I made right at 65-70 miles each off 2 tanks of supreme. I hear I should see 80. the mix is 1.5 turns out and the idle is right. The scooter has 8000 and change on it. Where is my gas mileage going (other than out the tailpipe?) 65 off $4 isn't bad but if I AM losing 15 mpg...

Really make certain the bystarter is completely blocked off. It controls a second venturi with a rich jet, and if the mechanism is removed and the passages and jet are still clear you will get a rich mixture that will start easily when cold but will run poorly and get bad mileage. Which sounds like your story. So I'd look into getting a replacement bystarter, or diving into the carburetor and seeing what I'm describing, then blocking the passages completely.

awesome. thanks guys. mileage might be due to my large behind, but I will get on the bystarter topic and learn of it. Do I really need a 24mm carb? that seems big. bear says a 21mm at least. I'm just concerned of going too large... thx.

I believe the 80's use the thermal bi-metallic valve bystarters - there is a control box mounted on the cylinder with 3 hose connections. The control box takes in air from one connection, fuel from another, mixes them based on temperature, and outputs the mix into the intake supplementing the normal mix. When cold, the valve opens to mostly fuel, as it warms up, it slowly adds air to the mix, and when warmed up, the valve should close off completely.

Put clear hoses (1/4") on it and watch to see if it operates correctly. The important thing is that it closes off completely when warm - otherwise you will never get it to run right.

When these devices work properly, they are great - I can hop on my 80, crank it, and take off - no warming up needed. However, when they are slightly off, they can cause nightmares. If it is not closing off completely you can sometimes clean it by pumping carb cleaner in thru the hoses and let soak overnight.

Bear has a great post about a way to replace the control box with a simple on/off fuel switch if it isn't working properly. Here is the link:

o.k.- not perfect. I did more reading. Found the pdf manual... Seems 142 is MINIMUM? I was under the impression a 28 year old 80cc 2 stroke was doing good to pop out 100 psi. -sigh-

it's a harbor freight cheapie, little screw-in jobbie. not the most accurate, I suppose.
So, Am I rebuilding an engine soon? Not the end of the world. I am somewhat disheartened to find out how little I know, just like Dad said... "in your 40's, you'll see that I am not the stupid one, son."

OK don't panic. One of my Aero 80's compression is within spec, but the other is a 90 PSI motor.

Top speeds are within 1/2 mph and mileage is the same. But the only place the 90 motor lags is on the hills.

So don't worry about the 100 PSI.
