Can a chain slip over a tooth?

Hey Everyone,

I have an 85 Spree. I took it out of winter storage and first ride it started to clunk. Kinda like the chain is slipping over a tooth. This only happens from dead start and stops once it's moving about 7 or 8 mph. And I can feel it also.

My thoughts are chain ... but I don't know if it can actually slip over a tooth. Next thought was clutch ... but then I though it should just slip, not clunk if it's going.

Opinions? Oh, and could it be lacking oil in the chain case. Or clutch case?

your spree does not have chain drive, it has belt drive. a belt connects between the drive pulley and the driven pulley. there is no oil in that part of the transmission. i suggest you pull the small bolt on the side of trans to see if there is any oil in there. if not then you could be chewing up the gears.

A partially tore up belt will do this.

I'll check for the oil first. I went and took a pic .... is this (circled in red) the screw you're talking about Odin?? And if so, what type of oil should I add?

that is not it, the bolt you are looking for is on the cover that has your engine code, AF05E. straight back on the side you took your pic. and it is 3 oz of 10W-30

Thanks Odin. Great description of where it was. I never realized a transmission would be right at the back.

Okay ... I removed it and some oil attempted to escape. So I assume it's full and where it's supposed to be.

Next is what Bear said. I have a flat spot or a torn up belt.

Where is the belt. And I really don't know my way around these scooters so the more detailed you are the better if you don't mind.

See the bolt just to the right of your red circle in the photo posted. That is one of many bolts all the way around the alum. cover, remove all of those remove the cover and you will find your belt.

Just an update ...

I took off the belt cover and there's no problem that I could see. I even measured the belt and it's within spec. I TRIED to take off the clutch but that nut would budge. So I put it back together again.

Could it be the clutch? That's my next attack plan but I need to know how to get that d*** nut off. Is it just brute force that's needed?

I highly recommend a harbor freight 3/8'' earthquake impact gun. I think this is by far the best impact for the money. It is a little beast. I have 2 of them, I also have snap on, and matco, but never use them. For scooters and most everything else that little guy handles business.

I was going to try an impact wrench ... but I thought I'd ask on here first. Now I will.

The starter works well with no weird noises ... and the noise/shudder only happens from take off to about 6 or 7 mph...then it's fine.

Thanks again, I'll keep you posted once I get back to it. Got a garden tractor that needs attention now.
