Honda Elite 80 Spewing Gas, Not Running

Post by laughatthemall »

Hello, I'm having a * of a time and I'm hoping some of you more experienced guys can help me.

I've recently acquired a Honda Elite 80 that someone had from what it appears, crashed (the side plastics are gone but otherwise it seems fine). It had been sitting with gas in it, so I tore the carb apart, cleaned out the petcock, and made sure all lines were cleaned.

I have the main jet and pilot jet cleaned, the fuel goes into the carb, you can see through both jets and the hole where the needle goes in, but for whatever reason, I can't seem to get this figured out.

When I press in the brake and start it, it seems to start fine sometimes, it revs REALLY high, then it dies out. It will stay running anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or so. If you give it gas, it bogs down and dies, but sometimes it seems to 'catch' and gets really cranking at WOT.

What really concerns me is that there is gas pouring out a hole in the carburetor when you start it, and even moreso if you crank on the gas. It appears to be coming out of where the carb would connect to the airbox; there are two holes at the bottom of the side that connects to the airbox, they seem to lead to the jets. The small one seems to intersect to the pilot jet, and the large one seems to intersect to the main jet. They are both unclogged and clean. It seems that gas just pours out of the main jet hole. I don't understand why this is happening or even what the holes are for (I have only ever rebuilt 2 Yamaha CA-50 carbs, one Honda Spree carb, and one Kawasaki KE100 carb... All 2-strokes.) If you had any ideas to what I should do next, or how to fix this, or what these 'ducts' into the jets are for, this would be wonderful. Also note, I don't have the airbox, I'm trying to get it running before replacing this (it was missing when I obtained the bike.)

Any help you have to offer would be greatly appreciated.

You need to clean the carb again, carefully, paying close attention to the idle circuit & the pilot circuit. The fuel running out the vent is because the needle and seat not closing either from being bad, having crap in it or the float either maladjusted or being bad, sinks.

This isn't your carb but it gives you the idea.

I saw a picture guide for the CVK carb like yours a while back but can't find it now.

I just checked all of that, still nothing. Everything is flowing free. I guess I'll try to find/order a rebuild kit and pray that solves it. :(

I am a newb at this stuff, but I know that my carb constantly had gas all over it. It was the petcock. It wasn't stopping the flow of gas. I don't know about elites, but on my spree, the petcock has two holes. One for gas, and one for a vacuum. The carb sends a vacuum to the petcock, which flexes the diaphragm, causing the petcock to let the gas come out. My petcock was stuck in the open position. It was constantly flooding the carb with gas. Maybe have a look at that?

If the needle and seat are closing properly, a bad petcock will not cause flooding. Flooding is still caused by a leaking needle and seat or a bad float.

Okay. But not to get off topic, when mine would sit overnight, I would seem to have a lot of gas all over the carb (and some on the ground). Is that still only carb related?

Well, I just thought if there was no way to stop the gas from flowing in, it would just keep flooding the engine, but I guess I was wrong. :?

That is what the needle and seat is for. When the float bowl is full of fuel, the needle closes and stops the fuel from entering the carb. As long as the needle seals properly, then regardless of the petcock working or not. A good needle and seat will stop 6 to 7 PSI of fuel pressure, as with a fuel pump in old carburated cars.
