Bogging down after riding 10 minutes
Hi all,
I am puzzled by my 86 Spree.
It starts up and idles strong and I can take it for a ride and it accelerates well up to 30mph. After 10-15 minutes of riding WOT , when I try to accelerate after a stop sign or turn, the throttle is bogged down, and Im only going 15-20mph. The same thing happened today, it starts up and runs fine for a while, then the engine bogs down and im limping home at a low speed.
Before riding it this spring, I cleaned the air filter, took the muffler off and baked the carbon out of it. I also checked the exhaust port and it wasnt too clogged. I cleaned that and reassembled the muffler.
Im suspecting something wrong with the carb, but I decided to ask you guys first.
Thanks,
Chaz

Re: Bogging down after riding 10 minutes
Thanks for the suggestion!
I took it riding again today and when I noticed it starting to bog down, I pulled over and took the tank cap off. The bogging continued. Where is the screen for the gas tank? How should I check the petcock?
Thanks,
Chaz

Re: Bogging down after riding 10 minutes
You should see 2 lines from the petcock to the carb (see service manual). Fuel should only flow through the fuel line when the vacuum line has a vacuum. So pulling the vacuum line off at the carb (vacuum line should come off bottom of petcock) and sucking on it should release the petcock valve and allow fuel to flow thru the fuel line (off side of petcock). If the fuel does not flow freely, you may need to check the petcock or the long cylindrical fuel filter screen which inserts into the tank where the petcock attaches.
If the fuel does flow freely then you may want to move on to carb evaluation - clean it per the instructions in Wikispreedia, then pretend you didn't and clean it again.

Re: Bogging down after riding 10 minutes
I sucked on the vacuum line and fuel comes out of the petcock, so I think I will disassemble and clean the carb tomorrow. I started it up today and it doesnt have enough rpm to move me anywhere, so Im thinking theres a problem with a dirty carb? I havent cleaned it since I got it a year ago.
Ill let you guys know whats up,

Re: Bogging down after riding 10 minutes
Gas tank vent plugged. Try riding with the gas cap slightly loose instead of tightened down. If problem gone, vents in the gas cap are plugged.

Re: Bogging down after riding 10 minutes
Ok, I dissasembled the carb and cleaned it, and reset the screws. The scooter starts and idles fine, but is bogged like before, it doesnt get to high rpm and struggles when full throttle and wont move under my weight anymore, and when I am moving, Im only going 10 mph instead of 30 like it normally does. I checked the petcock and the feul tank cap, and those work fine.
I noticed that there is slightly more grey smoke coming out of the muffler than it used to, and I took out the spark plug, and instead of being dry and brown, its all oily and wet. Someone told me that it could be something wrong with reeds?
my scooter worked fine for a month before this all happened, although its only been 2 weeks of riding 10+ miles every other day or so

Re: Bogging down after riding 10 minutes
NOT YOUR REEDS! If it was reeds, it would be a b**** to start and have a * of a time idling. Don't listen to self made scooter experts with no 2 stroke knowledge.ChazSpree wrote:Ok, I dissasembled the carb and cleaned it, and reset the screws. Re: Bogging down after riding 10 minutes
I suspect you may have re assembled the carburetor in correctly. Disassemble and re clean. SET the screws per wikispreedia.

Re: Bogging down after riding 10 minutes
I reassembled it, but the bogging and low RPM was a problem BEFORE I cleaned the carb, there was no improvement in performance at all after I cleaned the carb, checked the petcock and the tank cap, and checked the exhaust port AND decarbonized the muffler.. I am waiting to buy a compression gauge, to test the chamber, is it possible that I wore put my piston rings after all that extended riding ?
Im frustrated cuz I was counting on this scooter to get to work for the summer instead of my gas guzzling truck, lol
Thanks,
Chaz

Re: Bogging down after riding 10 minutes
Never heard of a compression issue causing a bog.

Re: Bogging down after riding 10 minutes
So, you are no longer able to ride 10 - 15 minutes before bogging occurs? The grey smoke and oil coming out of your muffler would indicate an abundance of oil in your crankcase perhaps. Have you checked your plug - what does it look like?
Bear and Mr. Free will give you more experienced advice than I can, but I would look at the possibility of a leaky oil pump, oil in the crankcase, or clogged muffler. The appearance of the plug could give a hint.

Re: Bogging down after riding 10 minutes
well,it USED to bog down after riding, not its all the time. I puller the plug after running it a while and its all black and oily. It used to not smoke as much, and be light brown around the plug. I checked the o ring and it looks to be on correctly, but like I said, I had this reduced rpm issue before I cleaned the carb.
My enginge used to accelerate well, and have high rpm and havealot of pep, now its smoky, and struggles to gain rpm, and on WOT it can take me anywhere over 10mph, looking at the plug, it seems like its choking on oil. I have the same GN2 oil Ive always had in the oil tank.
Thanks for helping me with this, as all my small engine experience has been gas trimmers and mowers, now Im sad my lil spree is sick
