Motor running out of controls

Post by sjleto »

So I picked up a second 93 honda elite sr for $200 bucks. It wasn't running but I cleaned the carb and checked the petcock. I got it started but it is not running very well. When I give it full throttle and then let off and it stays open. Checked the cables and those are fine. I also have been adjusting the mixture screws and those don't seem to change anything. Sometimes Ill start it and it will idle for about a minute then die out. Ideas???

Sounds more like the slide is sticking in the WOT position. FYI, even if the twist grip moves to the idle position does not mean the throttle slide does. The other issues are irrelevant until the throttle problem is cured.

i just figured with it idling for a lil bit and dieing that the slide has nothing to do with it

Engine starts and idles (too rich probably). Crack the throttle to WOT and it won't return to idle. Shut motor off and start in again, now it idles but dies shortly. It is irrelevant as a stuck throttle can kill you while a screwed idle is just a PIA.

Thanks for all the suggestion. This weekend I had some time to work on it and I took the whole carb apart cleaned it and checked and double checked to make sure it was put back together correctly. I have checked the slide and it is not sticking at all. Moves very freely. What I have noticed that that if I leave it sit for a bit it will start right up and run/idle for about 5 minutes and die out if you don't touch it. if you give it throttle it will rev up but will die out eventually. If you try to start it up after it dies out it won't for about 5/10 min.

It seems like too much air is getting into the carb. I have the idle screw pretty much all the way out and the air/fuel about 1 and half out.

I am getting a compression tool from my neighbor to test that. Could that maybe be causing a low vacuum?

Did you just set it there or did you adjust it per the service manual and end up there?

Greetings:

Idles 5 minutes and dies? Sounds like a fuel flow problem to me, Dawgs.
Check the tank screen, petcock and yes, low vacuum could prevent the petcock from staying open.
Double check the float valve assy too.

Check the tank vent in the gas cap but I doubt it.
