Need help getting 1985 honda spree running again

Post by mechfighter »

I have a 1985 Honda spree that im trying to get running again. it ran the last 2 summers i had it but it would lose power after about 15mph, it also vibrated very badly but i think its just cuz its a 2 stroke. so i cleaned the carb multiple times and air box and made sure there was no air leaks within those regions. the bike ran a little bit better (20mph) so i made sure the carb was properly adjusted and it ran consistent for a year but still bogged down after 20mph.

the problem begin when i was riding one night and my auto bystarter fell off my bike and smashed on the cement. i bought a new one but the bike was extremely hard to start, so i assumed it was an electrical problem(new bystarter probably wasn't getting electricity).

i could get the bike to start on occasion but i didnt touch it for about 3 months. now i cleaned the carb again and emptied the gas tank and got a new petcock after i noticed the last one gummed up and i cant get the bike to start at all. theres gas in the carb and a brand new spark plug which gets a spark. i know the bystarter is probably not working, but i could get it started before with some effort. my concern is that there is low compression because when i spray starter fluid in the engine it doesn't ignite or its very weak when it does fire. i have a new piston and head gasket and my next decision is to get the bystarter working again and then replace the piston. Any suggestions or feedback as to what i should do or if this is a good idea would help.

First off, NEVER use starting fluid on a 2-Stroke!!! It will dry off the cylinder walls and can really damage your cylinder!

Is the gas and oil new? If so, get out your multimeter and go through the Spree Manual to check for what it says should be proper readings.

If the bystarter is the problem, Search for the thread "Manual Choke". My bystarter went out, and I got a manual one that is SOOO much simpler, and works just the same.

Also, check your battery voltage. A low battery will give weak spark.

As for it cutting out, it most likely is an air leak. Is your newer by-starter installed correctly? Do you have the stock air filter and bx on? Is it secured tightly to the intake side of your carb?

there is a o ring that make the bystarter air tight if its not in there it cood be why its not starting good ..
as for you boging out thing try this when it start to bog dont hit the brakes.... snap off the gas then back on then off a fue times ( 6 or 8) if this fix it.... it cood be you pet * your running out of gas in the carb..

thank you for the help, much appreciated. I'm going to replace my fuel and vacuum line, and buy a manual choke to try out, and i wont put anymore starter spray in my 2 strokes (helpful hint). ill check again for air leaks and make sure my battery is not weak. i did have a question about the wiring because i'm worried it could be part of the problem as a lot of it is in bad shape, very bad shape. i'll post some pictures to show it, cuz i think it needs to be replaced, not sure where to buy that though. let you know what happens when i start working on the bike, will prbly be a couple of days until i get it all done, got some exams for college this week. :thumbwink:

Just so you dont go down the wrong track, the battery has nothing to do with spark. These things can run fine with no battery if you have a kick starter. I know the 85s dont have them stock, but the premise is the same.
