I definitely plan on buying one of those in the future, but as the title of the thread states, I am looking for the Poor Man's solution, heh. Spending an unexpected $2k in the last 2 months on vehicles that wasn't in the budget has really screwed me up. Ready to get her running and running right so I can sell one of our two crappy vehicles and buy a 2nd scoot.

Alright, so I froze the bearings for about 36 hours, broke out the hair dryer and got the transmission cover nice and hot, tried to slip the bear in and...nothing. Fit about as well as it did with both at room temperature. Even had everything nice and slick with a coating of oil.

So I decided to try method 2...light hammering (even though Bear advised against it...lesson learned) and now have a nice crack in my transmission cover.

Is there something I am missing in the freeze and warm method??

Hair dryer is nowhere near hot enough. Oven at 300 degrees or a propane torch should do the trick.

Thanks. I must've misunderstood a previous post in this thread and thought I was getting it warm enough. I found a new cover and hopefully it will be here by next weekend and I can try this. I need to get a IR temperature gauge and make sure I'm getting it to 300+ I guess. What's the MAXIMUM temperature that I'd want to make sure I keep it under to prevent warping?

I just re-read through the posts and see Bear said to use a hair dryer. Apparently the hair dryer gets hot enough....interesting. I've put the case in the oven at 300 degrees for 20 minutes with no damage to the seals, by the way i'm talking about the crank not the trans but i would think you'd get the same result with the trans.

I agree, I have used a hair dryer in a pinch and had it work, but a heat gun is best. I am leary of torches on aluminum cases. An infrared temp sensor is an asset in know how hot and where to apply the heat. You do have to have the cold bearing in hand and drop it in as the heat comes off. 300 degrees should NOT hurt the seals as the engine can get that hot while running.

Thanks guys. I have a heat gun I can borrow from a friend. I also apparently have opened up a can of worms on the home front as my wife was apparently looking for an excuse to get a new hair dryer anyway...

NO HARBOR FREIGHT! My God man move to civilization, quick. Actually I don't have a Harbor Freight in the county either but the closest city is the state capitol and they have on 40 miles away. But that's what you get with country living.

Closest one's about 70 miles away. That's beautiful, by the way. You made a much nicer trade off for no HF than I did.

When I moved here there was no Harbor freight in the state. But the wife and I had had it with the big city.
