SA50 AF16 to AF05 Swap

Post by Burgleflickle »

I need some sage expertise here: I have an 89 Elite LX with an af16 that has 7800 miles on it, low compression and a busted gearbox. I bought a parts bike with a good engine and low miles for a swap, but it's an 89 elite S with an af05. Everything looks like it bolts up, however I'm noticing two major differences between the two.

1: The throttle linkage on the af16 also has a link to an oil sender.
2: The af05 has no such linkage on the sender.

Rewiring the harness seems pretty easy, and everything else seems pretty straight forward, but using the af16's oil tank with the af05's oil sender worries me. I'd like to use the af16's oil tank on the bike as well as the larger af16 fuel tank, and I'm also wondering what other parts can be salvaged from the af16 for use on the af05(i realize they spin in opposite directions). I have a new carb on the af16 I'd love to use instead of taking apart and cleaning the old one that came w/ the bike.

Greetings:

No US Elite had the AF16 in 1989, unless your LX has been previously swapped. Both the SE/05 and the SA/16 engines spin "forward". The Elite "E" models are backward-sp1nners like the Spree. Single reduction gears reverse the direction. Look at the kickstarter for confirmation. If it swings forward, it's a non-variated engine.

If we're talking about 05 to 16 Variated, then one difference is that the later 16 engines have bigger bushings at the engine mount which will need to match those on the bracket. The carbs should swap without issues. Finally, the oil pump can be hooked to the carb by swapping cables.

If your 05 is a non-variated and you're thinking of swapping it into an Elite frame, you will be mocked and ostracized and eventually deported to Yemen. Dude! Swap in an E-yo!!

Af16 to af05.... I got the bike for $25(clean vin) and the engine has 2200 mi on it. If it is a nonvariated model I thought you could take the boss off the af16 and use it's vari.

im guessing that the AF05 engine is from the 88-93 elite LX(sa50) and you want to take out the busted AF16 and swap in the VARIATED AF05. they should just swap with ease, like wheelman said check the motor mount to confirm they are same or different. the split cable will work just attach the the oil pump. dont worry about the oil tanks. if the parts bike is the variated AF05 then no need to swao fuel tanks. give us some pics of the nike you are fixing and the pic of your donor bike. we will beable to help you better.

Greetings:

We're all trying to
guess
what it is you mean. This is very confusing:
need some sage expertise here: I have an 89 Elite LX with an af16
The '89 had the Variated SE/05 block. Was it swapped by the P.O? Do you mean a '99? SA/16s arrived in the US in 1994.
bought a parts bike with a good engine and low miles for a swap, but it's an 89 elite S with an af05.
The Elite S was the resticted version of the Elite, Model Code SA50P. Do you mean you bought an '89 SB50 Elite E? The faster version was labeled Elite ES. That would be a non-variated 05.
Af16 to af05....
Uhhh, Whut?
If it is a nonvariated model I thought you could take the boss off the af16 and use it's vari
.
Unless you can cast your own cases and machine your own cranks, there's no way to use a variator on the Spree or SB non-variated crank. Honda's Pal was a Factory variated version in other markets, but sadly they were rare worldwide and never sold in the US.
Read the markings, examine the frame stickers and have a peek under them belt covers to see whatcha got. Clearer questions are more likely to get accurate, useful answers.

If you just need an engine that makes smoke under your LX frame, then I guess you can install either block with some bushing work.
