New '84 Aero 80 owner

Post by strgt »

Just picked up an 84 honda Aero 80cc for $120 and It needs a little work. This is my first scooter so bare with me. Never owned one, rode one, worked on one, and I know very little about them. I race motorcycles, and Im pretty mechanically inclined though and got this to use as a pit bike. I am very exited about this because its a Honda and thats what I race

Fist off, it takes a while for the clutch to engage, it takes about 5 seconds at WOT least for the clutch to feel like its engaging. Then it takes off extremely slow. The carb needs to be cleaned really bad, and the scooter barely has any power until it gets going. Im guessing thats because its running lean. It also only idles for about 15 seconds before it dies. What are some things I should take a look at?

Also, does anyone have an electronic copy of the service manual for this scooter or one with a similar clutch?

This would be the closest manual: http://www.hondaspree.net/phpBB3/viewto ... f=11&t=681
The clutch is the same in most of these, your nh80 is just scaled up a bit. Congrats on one of the best scoots ever built. Clean the carb and check the spark plug, then get back to us to see how it is reacting. We can school you on automatic scooter variators (the part that makes this 6hp beast feel like it has much more power when compared to a motorcycle with 6 hp).
